Is Expensive Website Design Effective?

A high quality video of a business woman explaining the benefits of her product plays across the computer monitor. A “Click here” message guides website viewers to another area where the product can be purchased. Flashing words state, “Add product to shopping cart.” Used with other website design elements, these enhancements amount to a stimulating website experience for viewers. Yet, does the experience, which can be costly for website owners to create, matter to its viewers?

Expensive website design is effective depending on the business being advertised. For example, a children’s party business with a bland website may not draw many customers. Viewers may view the site as a reflection of services that will be rendered. However, a site with video party clips and dancing cakes may reflect an innovative and interesting party business. Potential customers may be more inclined to book a party with the party business that has an interactive website.

Ideally, if viewers are coming to a site for information, the words are more important than the website design. Yet, if video, graphics, or audio elements are included to further the reader’s grasp of the material, the website’s effectiveness may be improved. For instance, some blog and article writers add video or relevant photographs to their sites or article pages. By adding these, the viewer may remain on the website or page longer.

Accessibility and speed influence the effectiveness of website design, too. If a Flash introduction takes too long to download, viewers may lose interest in the site and go to another one. Of course, the viewer’s use of dial-up or DSL impact the speed, but if the site has too much to download, this can distract from the purpose of the site. However, if the interactive elements don’t take too long to download, the chances of viewers waiting to see what’s on the site increases. Thus, the website has an opportunity to engage viewers.

A website is only effective as its ability to grab and keep the attention of viewers. If viewers don’t see the webpage or wait for elements to download, regardless of the cost to create the website, it cannot be effective. If used in moderation, interactive website design may increase the perceived value of a product or service and may cause viewers to linger on a site, which may increase the website’s impact on the viewer.
